More Fair, More Fun, Same Revenue? Testing Distance Based Ticketing in Local Transport
Brakar is partnering with Suiss FAIRTIQ to test an innovative, distance-based pricing model for local public transport. The pilot will be the first of its kind in the country, offering bus passengers a seamless and potentially fairer way to pay for their journeys—based on the distance they actually travel. The one-year pilot project launched last autumn in the Norwegian region of Buskerud and is part of a broader effort by Brakar to make public transport more attractive and user-friendly. The project responds to feedback from residents and travellers, many of whom have voiced concerns about the perceived unfairness of the current zone-based pricing system. Brakar will investigate how Norwegian public transport customers who travel by bus experience distance-based ticketing. Do they experience a fairer price than in a zonal system? Does it affect how often they travel? Does it change travel patterns? And last but not least, how to ensure sufficient revenue? The pilot will provide valuable data for further strategic development of ticket fares in the region that are both attractive to users and sustainable for the authority.
