At the core of Hungary’s transport policy is to have an integrated, affordable and modern nation-wide public transport network, with railways as its backbone. In 2024 we have fundamentally redesigned the ticketing system. The new system enables passengers to use multiple modes of transport (rail, interurban bus) for their journey with one ticket. Moreover, we have reached an agreement with three major cities (Budapest, Debrecen and Szeged), where passengers can also use the local public transport (tram, bus, suburban rail and tram-train). Since introducing the new ticketing system, the number of passengers has increased for the first time in years.

As part of the reinvented ticketing system, we have introduced the Hungary Pass and the County Pass. The Hungary Pass is valid throughout the country, it is really affordable and has quickly become a student favourite for less than 5 euros per month. The favourable price and its versatility are important factors in increasing the competitiveness of railways. These improve the accessibility of railways since passengers can use one ticket to get to the station and on the train, offering a more sustainable option in solving the last mile problem.
