Jeremy Meal is Director Smart Ticketing and Fares Strategies at SYSTRA Ltd having previously worked for a PTE and privatised bus company either side of bus deregulation. Initially he was on secondment to Singapore for their successful integrated transport payment card project delivery in the early 1990s and its subsequent migration to a smart card (Ez-link). Now, Jeremy leads a team that has been involved with a large number of the UK smart card scheme roll-outs on public transport, particularly but not exclusively on buses and for card-production system set-up. This has included seeing several schemes through from inception, business case development, funding application, specification and procurement to deployment. Indeed it is in this latter role that SYSTRA has established its strong reputation for helping to make ITSO schemes happen, working with different suppliers to satisfy client aspirations in meeting their own local project objectives. Indeed in the past twelve years, under Jeremy’s lead, SYSTRA has been at the heart of ITSO implementation across many major UK schemes including Scotland, Wales, Centro, SWSAL and for the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) advice to DfT through the strategic guidance, specification work and national testing undertaken in 2007-8 which set the initial pace of national ITSO roll-out alongside the schemes in Scotland and Wales. More recently, SYSTRA has pioneered development on several commercial ITSO scheme implementations with advice to Cardiff Bus (stored-value Iff Card based on STR), Newport Transport (Passport period pass) and the innovative interoperable carnet ticket for the Cambridge Busway as well as more recent seconded staff support over several months to Centro for SWIFT STR and nBus smart ticketing and Nottingham City Council for the launch of ITSO day-capping from mid-December 2015, a multi-modal ITSO first. The wider team has also recently helped deliver the National Youth Card this September for discounted bus travel in Wales. We have also been assisting several other schemes in STR deployment such as NoWcard’s NoWStar and Kent Connected during 2015. Jeremy was also elected in October 2012 by the ITSO Supplier Members as one of the Sector Directors to the Board of ITSO Limited to serve for 3 years and was recently re-elected unopposed for a further term.
