Steve Howes has many years of experience in the design, development and operation of technology solutions to support public transport and highway operations.

He is currently working as a consultant to a number of suppliers and Authorities in the transport sector advising on ticketing and information systems strategy.

Prior to this he worked as Delivery Director of the Intelligent Transport Systems component of the King Abdulaziz Project in Riyadh. The programme is providing AVM, RTPI, and AFC systems to bus and metro as part of this major programme of public transport development in the city. It is one of the largest ITS programmes currently under development in the world.

Previously he was, for ten years, Managing Director of Rail Settlement Plan (RSP) Limited, a company owned by the GB passenger train operators. He was closely involved in the modernisation of ticketing on the railway, covering Oyster, ITSO, barcode and latterly EMV technologies, working with the train companies, retailers, DfT and TfL.

Prior to this, at Serco, he was Divisional Managing Director responsible, inter alia, for building and operating the National Traffic Control Centre and for running the out-sourced BBC Travel Unit.

His introduction to smart ticketing was at WS Atkins where he sat on the Board of Transys, the SPV delivering the Oyster solution.

Steve is a graduate of mathematics, a Chartered Electrical Engineer, and a Fellow of the British Computer Society.

Outside of work he is a Director and Trustee of the Rugby Free Schools Trust and Treasurer of the Rugby 12th Scout Group.
