The public transit industry is striving to recover from the impact of COVID-19 on service and passenger numbers. Transit agencies are using different strategies to bring back lost passengers while ensuring a safe journey for the drivers. Open Payment based on cEMV technology – credit cards – offers passengers a fast, secure and contactless payment method at the best fare, an excellent service and a great customer experience. The presentation will discuss the very first cEMV Open Payment project for public transit in Germany that has gone live in September 2020: Passengers use their personal contactless credit cards and mobile payment apps to pay for travel in a Pay as You Go mode. Registration and selection of the right ticket or best fare is no longer necessary: They just simply start their journey by tapping the contactless credit card, smartphone or smartwatch when boarding. The system fully exploits the potential of Open Payment technology and provides capping functionality and best price calculation. It is one outstanding example of utilizing technology to shape the future of transit.

Open payment fare collection systems are transforming transit organizations nationwide— simplifying operations and bringing a new era of convenience to the people they serve. By using proven technology, these systems enable commuters to pay for their trips with the tap of a bank card; eliminating the need to wait in line at ticket machines and counters.

But, consumers aren’t the only ones who benefit. Most transit agencies reduce their costs, increase rider access, and gain access to valuable rider data. It’s one of those rare situations in life where everyone actually wins.

Today’s transport systems need to have customer experience at the heart of their services. This requires leveraging multiple technologies and solutions at the same time rather than having single technology based services. In order to stay competitive with a successful transport offering, transport systems need to focus on flexibility, user experience, and transparency while adopting emerging technological trends such as mobile, cloud and progressive/adaptive technologies.
