Why does the public transport industry need an open standard?

More than fifty major municipalities worldwide already use smart cards and smart tickets for mass transit solutions. This development is of high importance to almost all countries and major cities in the world. Daily life is impacted by efficient public transport systems, and inadequate transport provision restricts access to social, political and cultural activities and harms the natural environment as well as quality of daily life. Therefore the mission of Public Transport Agencies is to provide high-quality, accessible and affordable public transport to all, with a specific focus on improving reliability and security of the systems, as well as convenience and service for end customers. The challenge will be for the different parts of the value chain to work closely together to supply “future proofed” electronic ticketing solutions to meet the needs of stakeholders in the public transport industry for the 21st Century.
This interactive session will provide the opportunity for debate and questions with senior executives from across the smart card industry, and will examine the need for an open standards approach to transport ticketing.
